Pregnancy is a journey filled with anticipation and excitement, but it also comes with its share of changes. While you're likely familiar with common pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness and fatigue, a host of lesser-known pregnancy symptoms can catch expectant mothers by surprise. Understanding these changes can help you navigate pregnancy with more confidence and ease. So, let’s dive into some of these lesser-known physical, emotional, digestive, and skin-related changes.

Physical Changes

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Many pregnant women experience tingling, numbness, or pain in their hands due to carpal tunnel syndrome. This occurs because pregnancy-related swelling can pressure the nerves in the wrist. To manage these symptoms, try wearing wrist splints at night, avoiding repetitive hand movements, and keeping your hands elevated.

Nosebleeds

Are you suddenly experiencing more nosebleeds than usual? Increased blood flow and hormonal changes during pregnancy can make your nose more delicate and, therefore, more susceptible to bleeding. To help with this, use a humidifier to keep the air moist, stay hydrated, and apply a cold compress to your nose if needed.

Varicose Veins

As your baby grows, the pressure on your veins can lead to varicose veins—those swollen, twisted veins in your legs. To ease the discomfort, consider wearing compression stockings, elevating your legs when possible, and incorporating gentle exercise into your routine.

Emotional Changes

Vivid Dreams

Pregnancy can bring about vivid dreams, likely due to increased brain activity and hormonal changes. These dreams can range from entertaining to puzzling and sometimes disturbing. Keeping a dream journal can help you explore and understand the emotional shifts during this time.

Nesting Instincts

As your baby due date approaches, you might experience a strong urge to clean, organise, or even redecorate your home. This nesting instinct can be a productive and satisfying way to focus your energy as you prepare for your baby’s arrival. Just remember to balance this with some rest.

Anxiety and Irritability

Pregnancy is a time of significant change, which can lead to heightened anxiety and irritability. Hormonal shifts and the anticipation of parenthood can intensify these emotions. Acknowledging these feelings and seeking support from loved ones or a mental health professional is important. Practices like deep breathing and meditation can also help manage anxiety.

Digestive Changes

Constipation

Pregnancy hormones can slow down the digestive system, leading to constipation. To keep things moving, eat a fibre-rich diet, drink plenty of water, and stay active with light stretching and exercise. You can also talk to your healthcare provider about safe stool softeners if needed.

Heartburn

Heartburn can be expected in pregnancy due to hormonal changes that relax the valve between the stomach and oesophagus, as well as pressure from the growing baby. To reduce heartburn, try eating smaller, more frequent meals, avoiding spicy foods, and waiting a bit before lying down after eating.

Haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids, which are swollen veins in the rectal area, can develop in pregnancy due to increased pressure and constipation. To manage them, use gentle wipes, take warm baths, and avoid straining during bowel movements. The abovementioned strategies for alleviating constipation can also be beneficial. Speaking with your healthcare provider about topical treatments, such as haemorrhoid creams, may also be helpful.

Skin Changes

Acne

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can trigger acne. To manage this, maintain a gentle skincare routine and use non-comedogenic products specifically formulated not to clog pores. These products help keep your skin clear and healthy. Be sure to consult your healthcare provider to ensure the products are safe.

Skin Tags

Skin tags are small skin growths that can appear due to hormonal fluctuations and increased friction. These are usually harmless, but if they become bothersome, consult a dermatologist.

Darkening of the Skin

Many women experience a radiant complexion and fuller hair during pregnancy due to increased blood flow and hormonal changes. However, some women may also notice darker patches on their skin, known as melasma or the "mask of pregnancy." This can occur on the face, or other areas exposed to the sun. Wearing sunscreen and protective clothing can help minimise these changes and maintain your glow.
