PERINATAL MENTAL HEALTH WEEK | 10-16 NOVEMBER 2019

Following on from our Start talking initiative, Perinatal Mental Health Week 2019 is a chance to Start listening to what’s not being said by expectant and new parents.

1 in 5 new mums and 1 in 10 new dads will experience perinatal depression and anxiety.

Supporting a parent who is experiencing emotional distress involves asking the right questions and then engaging in active listening, but what about what’s not being said?

The stigma around mental health, especially in parenting, still exists.

Parents are bombarded with images and messages on social media and other channels portraying the picture-perfect experience.

“I wish I could tell you how I really feel.”

For an expectant and new parent in emotional distress, what’s not being said is even more important than what is said.

“I know I’m meant to be happy.”

Scrolling through Instagram with a new baby sleeping or feeding, new parents are vulnerable to the pressure to have it all together. But what if you’re not feeling happy, joyful, ok? What if the things you are not saying are the things that you really need to say aloud?

BREAKING NEWS

Perinatal depression and anxiety is costing Australia $877 million annually, according to new PwC Australia analysis prepared for Gidget Foundation Australia.

The analysis was produced with contribution from Gidget Foundation Australia, PANDA Australia, Peach Tree Perinatal Wellness and Perinatal Wellbeing Centre. Together, as four leading perinatal mental health consumer organisations, we have formed the Perinatal Mental Health Consortium.
